This death, of a statesman, pains me even more for this is the same period we lost his beloved wife, former First Lady Lucy Kibaki. We reflect on the late president’s legacy and pick up the immeasurable lessons herein. I got to know Mwai Kibaki early in my life when he was the minister for Health 1989/1990. There was some celebration for World Health Day in our locality. As it was the norm those days, during such functions primary school kids would entertain politicians and other  dignitaries. It is at this function I first saw a man with patches of hair on his otherwise big head, he had a  broad smile and I also noticed that he had big eyes. (This is what I could gather as a 7 years old boy).

In 1992 my late father was a campaigner for Mwai Kibaki's Democratic Party, this gave me a buzz of politics and I got to know more about Mwai Kibaki. Hon Joseph Konzolo Munyao a closer ally Kibaki was a frequent visitor to our rural home and he was visibly fond of Mwai Kibaki. The Deee Peee - Taa chants were all over our locality as people campaigned for Mwai Kibaki and Konzolo fought for the Mwala parliamentary seat.

In 2002 I was qualified to vote having attained the requisite age, obtained an Identity Card and registered as a voter. I was therefore keen to understand the campaigns and all the political happenings across the country. In one of the dailies I read how in Meru Mwai Kibaki had shed tears due to massive corruption across the country and decline of the country's economy. " He cried that our country was been auctioned by the KANU regime"

In  August of 2002 Mwai Kibaki accompanied by Charity Ngilu and Kijana Wamalwa visited our local town-Masii. Their long convoy snaked into Masii to a rousing and thunderous applause. The market came to a standstill as Charity Ngilu introduced Mwai Kibaki to the people. Ngilu in her characteristic humor described Kibaki as the finance minister who made it possible for women to buy petroleum jelly (Mauta Ma Kwivaka) so as to make them beautiful and attractive to their husbands. Kibaki outlined his agenda in staccato, he wasn't petty and there were no insults. When he was involved in a near fatal accident at the Machakos junction, I said a prayer for him.

On the 27th Dec 2002 with as a first time voter at Muthei Primary School polling station I voted for Mwai Kibaki-President (NARC), John Mutua Katuku-MP (NARC) and Evans Nzivo Mulomba-Councilor (NARC).  Early in the morning on 29th Dec 2002 I went to buy a loaf of bread 🍞 at a village Canteen owned by the Late Mutava Muoki. The old man was a former KANU youth Winger. I was so excited to tell him how Mwai Kibaki would be sworn in as t the 3rd president the following day; the Mzee told me how one cannot be sworn in as a president while on a wheel Chair. What a discouraging statement.

On 30th Dec 2002 at Scillary Hotel in Masii (the only hotel that we could watch the proceeding on TV) we witnessed the swearing in of Mwai Kibaki as the 3rd president of Kenya while on a wheel chair....it was all chants and jubilation.

Before Kibaki became the president in my village I had witnessed a number of graduates who were idle without jobs. Six months after Mwai Kibaki assumed power the unemployed got jobs and I could see happiness all over.  A myriad of companies sprouted across the country and job opportunities were available to a majority of qualified youths.

In a nutshell Mwai Kibaki transformed the country for the best and he set the country on a trajectory of success. All what Kenya need is a leader who will talk, think, live and act like Mwai Kibaki.

I will miss  president Emilio Mwai Kibaki

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

If we had 10 people doing just 50% of what he did for Kenya, then this would have been the best transformed country. He will not be forgotten for the good he did for Kenya. For making sure most of us went to school when we had no hope. Thank you Mzee and Rest in Perfect peace.

EDWIN OBARE

The former president was my former Chancellor and he was a great one. During graduations we longed for 'Kibaki lunch'. I was lucky to shake his hand once and he really meant his greetings with some small humor talk. you will be missed by many, shine on your way SIR. WHAT A STATESMAN.

Charles Mburu

President Kibaki initiated the construction of a secondary school in my home center called Longonot (at the foot of Mount Longonot), so when he visited the place our teachers and parents told him that they wanted to name the school after him but he refused! He said its not his type to be named all over while he is still alive. "Sisi tunatenda mema bila kutafuta sifaaa" remember his Swahili! He tought me and many others then that humility is when you do good without looking for fame.

May he rest in peace. Longonot fraternity sends our condolences to the family and the nation at large.

Go well mzee. Tutapatana baadaye.

Charles Mburu Wanjehia.
